Technology Should Serve Learning—Not the Other Way Around

Osseo needs purposeful technology use: less unnecessary screen time and responsible preparation for an AI-shaped future.

As a software engineer with eight years of professional experience in K–12 education, I believe deeply in the potential of technology.

It can expand access to learning, support scholars with different needs and give students powerful ways to create, communicate and explore. But a device should never become the default simply because it is available.

The question should always be:

Does this use of technology make the learning better?

Reasonable first safeguards

At its August 18 work session, the Osseo Area School Board received an update on the district’s plans for more intentional technology use.

Among the Fall 2026 changes presented by the district are:

  • Disabling Gemini and other generative artificial intelligence tools for elementary scholars.
  • Blocking YouTube and disabling the creation of Google Sites in grades K–5.
  • Limiting middle-school AI use to approved district tools such as Gemini and NotebookLM.
  • Blocking remaining social media sites, including X and Instagram, on district devices.
  • Giving families additional control over district-issued devices outside school through the Lightspeed Parent Portal.
  • Providing educators with additional guidance and training.

These are reasonable first safeguards. Elementary scholars do not need unrestricted access to generative AI, social media or the full universe of online video during the school day.

But filters and blocked websites cannot be the district’s entire technology strategy.

Technology should have a clear purpose

The most important part of the district’s presentation was the philosophy behind the proposed changes.

The district’s emerging framework says that relationships and classroom connection should come first. Technology should assist an educator rather than substitute for one. Scholars should use devices to code, analyze, create, communicate and participate—not simply consume content.

That is the right direction.

A device should come out because the lesson benefits from it. A lesson should not be built around a device simply because every scholar has one.

Technology can be valuable when it helps a scholar conduct research, receive meaningful feedback, use assistive tools, analyze data, model a concept or create original work. There are also many times when a printed book, a pencil, a class discussion, a science lab, a musical instrument or a hands-on project is the better educational tool.

Choosing those approaches is not resistance to innovation. It is good instruction.

The goal is not less technology for its own sake. It is less unnecessary screen time—and more intentional learning.

Teach responsible AI use, not avoidance

Artificial intelligence makes this conversation more urgent.

It would be irresponsible to allow students to use AI to bypass the reading, writing, mathematics, research and critical thinking they need to practice for themselves.

It would also be irresponsible to send graduates into college and the workforce without teaching them how to use AI thoughtfully.

Responsible AI education should teach scholars to:

  • Verify claims instead of assuming an AI-generated answer is correct.
  • Recognize fabricated information, bias and incomplete responses.
  • Protect personal and private information.
  • Be transparent when AI contributed to an assignment.
  • Understand when AI is useful—and when it should not be used.
  • Remain accountable for the accuracy and quality of their final work.

These expectations should develop as scholars get older. Elementary education should remain centered on foundational academics, creativity, relationships and digital citizenship. Middle- and high-school scholars can gradually receive more opportunities to use approved AI tools under clear educator guidance.

Responsible AI literacy is not simply knowing how to write a clever prompt. It means understanding how these systems can help, how they can fail and when human judgment must take priority.

Future-ready and child-centered

We cannot know every career today’s scholars will encounter. Some of the jobs they hold may not even exist yet.

Schools cannot prepare students for that future by teaching them how to operate one product that may eventually become obsolete. We must prepare them to adapt, ask good questions, evaluate information, communicate, collaborate and continue learning.

Strong foundations in reading, writing, mathematics, science and the arts will become more important—not less—as AI becomes more common. Those skills allow a person to recognize when a technological tool is incomplete, misleading or simply wrong.

As Osseo Area Schools develops its longer-term technology framework, the School Board should expect educators to remain at the center of instructional decisions. Technology purchases should be judged by learning outcomes, accessibility, privacy, cost and actual classroom value—not simply by the number of devices, licenses or logins.

Scholars must also continue to receive meaningful opportunities for face-to-face discussion, hands-on work, movement, reading and sustained learning away from a screen.

Osseo Area Schools should not chase every new platform that enters the market. We also should not retreat from the technological world our scholars will inherit.

We can be both future-ready and child-centered.

Technology should amplify the work of great educators, not replace them. It should help scholars create, not just consume. It should expand opportunity without introducing avoidable distraction. And it should prepare students to use artificial intelligence with judgment, honesty and responsibility—without allowing a machine to do all their thinking for them.

The goal is better learning—and every scholar deserves that standard.
